Second movement of a suite based on passages from novels about music, performed for the Yale Symphony Orchestra commencement concert on May 5th, 2018. This movement is inspired by two passages from Italo Calvino's novel "Invisible Cities"; Chapter 8, Cities & Names; and Chapter 3, Cities & Signs. Irene is the city surrounded by walls, where the music emanating from it tells nothing about what happens inside. Hypatia is the city where signs form a language, but not the one you know; where the musicians perch among the catacombs; where the philosophers reside in the gardens.
